The family of Philip Paxson, a North Carolina medical device salesman and father of two, filed suit Tuesday in North Carolina claiming he crashed and drowned in 2022 after Google Maps directed him in the dark to a road with a collapsed bridge.CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The family of a North Carolina man says he was following Google Maps directions when he drove off a collapsed bridge in the darkness and drowned.
“Mr. Paxson was unaware that the bridge had previously collapsed, and instead was under the reasonable belief that the road and bridge was safe to drive on,” according to the suit. “At that time, and for years prior, Google Maps directed drivers to cross over the collapsed bridge when users requested directions through its GPS services. Community members notified Google of the collapsed bridge and the danger its GPS services posed to those unfamiliar with the area.
The North Carolina State Patrol had said the bridge was not maintained by local or state officials, and the original developer’s company had dissolved. The lawsuit names several private property management companies that it claims are responsible for the bridge and the adjoining land.
