Nevada police are investigating a man’s death at the Burning Man festival, where heavy rains and muddy conditions forced thousands of Labor Day weekend partygoers to hunker down.
The festival typically draws tens of thousands of people to northwestern Nevada. The Reno Gazette-Journal reported over the weekend that more than 73,000 people were at this year’s festival. Ivan Arnold, who runs a helicopter charter company in Burbank, said his phone has been “ringing off the hook” since Saturday morning, with callers seeking a way out of the festival.Arnold, who helped deliver supplies to San Bernardino Mountains residents trapped by snow storms earlier this year, said he planned to offer free rides to high-risk people from the festival to the Reno airport about 40 minutes away.
Karole Holland-Hagino, who was attending her first festival with her son, said she was in a camp with about 125 people, and although the rain and mud made it hard to walk, she strolled the grounds for about four hours Saturday, barefoot.
