A man has been charged in the 2021 Chicago shooting death of beloved South Side dance coach Verndell Smith, the police department said.
CHICAGO -- Vernell Smith's presence is visible on every wall of a South Side dance studio he created several years ago.times as he left a nearby Dunkin Donuts. The driver of a silver SUV pulled into the parking lot and opened fire in the 7400 block of South King Drive, hitting Smith in the leg, arm, forehead and torso, police said then. Paramedics took Smith, 32, to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
LaToya said she was convinced there would be an arrest because police understood the impact her brother had in the community with kids. Smith's slogan was"Stop shooting and start dancing." Although partially deaf, Smith"found his voice" through dancing, LaToya told the Sun-Times last spring. He opened a dance studio, the Ultimate Threat Dance Organization, that he considered a safe space for the children.
