A man and a woman were cut from cars and taken to hospital after a collision this evening . Emergency services were scrambled to Wigan Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, around 7.15pm to the crash.
The road was closed in both directions for nearly three hours following the smash between two vehicles. It is the second serious crash where two people have been cut from their cars and taken to hospital today, following a similar incident in Stockport earlier. The crash involved two vehicles, according to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, with crews from Wigan and Leigh stations called to the scene. A man and a woman had to be cut free from the vehicles due to the damage caused in the collision.Both were taken to hospital by ambulance crews. Their extent of their injuries is unknown at this stage.
A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 7.15pm on Sunday, 7 th August firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on Wigan Road, in Ashton-in-Makerfield. Two fire engines from Wigan station, alongside the Technical Response Unit from Leigh, quickly attended the scene.
"Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to extricate a man and a woman from the vehicles. They were then transferred to the care of colleagues from NWAS and taken to hospital. Fire crews were in attendance for approximately one hour.” For more of today's top stories click here.
