Los Angeles resident Steve Curry collapsed outside the restroom at Golden Canyon in Death Valley National Park just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

People walk along a trail as the sun sets, Sunday in Death Valley National Park, Calif. DEATH VALLEY, California — A 71-year-old man died Tuesday after hiking in temperatures that were above 120 degrees and just hours after he had been interviewed by a newspaper reporter about the excessive heat.

Hours before he collapsed, Curry was interviewed at Zabriskie Point by a reporter with the Los Angeles Times, the parks service says. Ashows him covered in seeking shade under a sign while covered in sunscreen and also wearing gloves for protection. The Inyo County Coroner’s Office has not determined the man’s cause of death, but heat is a suspected factor. The official temperature at Furnace Creek was 121 degrees around the time of his death, but the parks service says actual temperatures inside Golden Canyon likely were much higher.

Death Valley has had 28 days of temperatures in excess of 110 degrees this year and temperatures reportedly have approached 130 degrees.
