A lifelong fan of the Spurs’ international-tinged rosters, European center Sandro Mamukelashvili is eager to fit in wearing silver and black.

“They had all these unbelievable foreign players they won championships with,” Mamukelashvili said. “It was unbelievable watching how fluid they played and how hard they played.”“I always wanted to have one of their jerseys,” Mamukelashvili said. With the Spurs’ center rotation decimated by the ejection of Zach Collins and foul trouble to Charles Bassey, Mamukelashvili came off the bench to log 11 points, four rebounds and two assists — all in the fourth quarter, all while dueling two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.“We’ve known him for like 24 hours,” forward Doug McDermott said, “and we all love him already.”
The club claimed Mamukelashvili off waivers without waiting for him to become a free agent, then converted his two-way contract to a full NBA deal for the remainder of the season. A player who was born in New York City, grew up in eastern Europe, attended high school in both Italy and Florida, and attended college in New Jersey, Mamukelashvili’s game is a mash-up of his influences.Mamukelashvili is friends with fellow Georgian NBA player Zaza Pachulia, though Spurs fans should not hold that against him. He also likes Steph Curry.
