Recent research has worked to identify whether rare genetics contribute to hair loss in man in order to improve understanding of the condition.
Rare genetic variants found in five genes are linked to hair loss in men, according to recent research.
Commonly, male hair loss is associated with. male-pattern baldness, widely believed to be caused by hereditary factors. However, greater understanding is required in terms of the genetic causes of the condition as current treatments and risk prediction are not sufficient. A link between male hair loss and EDA2R and WNT10A had already been established. However, previous research mainly concentrated on common genetic variants, pinpoints more than 350 genes linked to hair loss in men.
The HEPH gene forms part of the genetic region also connected to common variants, namely the EDA2R/Androgen receptor, also identified in previous studies. This make up has been found to have the strongest association with male-pattern hair loss. Sabrina Henne added: “HEPH itself has never been considered as a candidate gene. Our study suggests that it may also play a role.
