If your dog or cat gets lost, the information on their tags, chips, must be up to date to help
and a rabies tag on his collar, so I was optimistic about finding his owner quickly.
When I called PetLink, however, an automated voice told me the microchip was not registered. An animal shelter associated with the rabies tag said the tag belonged to a cat, not a dog, and the cat owner's phone number didn't work. So, I reported the lost dog to area animal shelters, posted his photo on neighborhood social media, and began my own reconnaissance. I tracked down who we thought might be the owner to place he worked, but he had since left. I found another number for him, which belonged to a Corpus Christi woman who had gotten his old number and was still receiving calls for him a year later. Ironically, she had worked with and knew the man’s wife, so she called her.
I went back to PetLink to look for more clues. The last time someone tried to update the microchip was May 26 — the same day the animal shelter held its vaccination clinic. So, I asked if any pugs had been vaccinated that day. They said yes and connected me to a woman who said she was missing a dog.She couldn't provide a photo , and she didn't sound relieved someone had just found her dog. She even asked me to bring the dog over.
After six hours, I took the dog to animal control to get him scanned for a microchip. They found two microchips: One was registered and helped get Pugsley back to his family. The nonregistered microchip was the number showing on his ID tag and the one I had been futilely searching under all day. The owner also had switched rabies tags on her dog and cat.
