The majority of people referred to the National Referral Mechanism come from Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan

Last year the majority of alleged human trafficking and modern slavery victims identified in Northern Ireland came from three East African countries.

There were only two UK citizens referred to the NRM, one adult and one child who are both females, with them being found to have been sexually exploited. Since the creation of the NRM there has been no UK national children referred to it with regards to criminal exploitation in comparison to 9,121 UK national children elsewhere in the UK.

However, nearly 90% of referrals are due to exploitation that has been identified outside of Northern Ireland, which could suggest the reason why the Home Office immigration teams have such high referral rates. Many are also believed to have freely travelled to Northern Ireland where their past history of modern slavery and trafficking has been identified.

It also said that Northern Ireland differs from the rest of the UK in the number of children reported to the NRM for criminal exploitation. Detective Chief Inspector Gail McCormick commented: “The National Referral Mechanism is a framework for identifying and referring potential victims of modern slavery and trafficking, and ensuring they receive the appropriate support.
