People are being asked to avoid the Vauxhall area where multiple road closures are in place
Costco and Home Bargains on Waterloo Road in Vauxhall are among the retailers who have been forced to evacuate this afternoon due to the gas leak. Fire crews were called to Waterloo Road, at the junction of Regent Street, at 12.18pm on Tuesday and arrived on scene four minutes later. Cadent, who manage Merseyside's local gas network, and Merseyside Police are at the scene and people are being told to avoid the area.
A spokesperson for Cadent said nobody has been hurt during the incident and "the actions of many has ensured we keep everyone safe." Merseyside Police are helping to assist with road closures and evacuating residential properties in the area. The fire service said: "Crews arrived to find a large gas leak from a pipe and are evacuating surrounding properties. Waterloo Road and shops and stores in the area are being evacuated by Merseyside Police, residents and businesses nearby are advised to keep doors and windows closed. Pedestrians and motorists should avoid the area."
