Race remains close with 62% of ballots counted countywide.
Matt Mahan maintained a narrow lead over Cindy Chavez in the race to become San Jose’s next mayor with the latest updated ballot count Friday evening.
“The registrar of voters is making tremendous progress and continues to count tens of thousands of votes that are still outstanding,” Chavez said Friday. “We want to make sure voters are heard in this important election.”“There are still a lot of votes to be counted and undoubtedly the margin will continue to bounce around, so we all just have to be patient and let the democratic process play out,” Mahan said.
She said San Jose’s police force remains 200 officers short of the department’s staffing when she left City Hall after 2006. She pointed to her efforts to get a $950 million bond for affordable housing passed, which helped house 20,000 people over the last five years.
