MagicMike3 director Steven Soderbergh reveals that Channing Tatum's Mike will be in a relationship in the franchise's film entry: 'Mike has a full-on relationship that's at the center of this movie... and we haven't done that before.'
Magic Mike 3 director Steven Soderbergh confirms that Mike, played by Channing Tatum, will be in a relationship that will be at the center of the film's narrative. Soderbergh announced his return to the franchise after directing the original Magic Mike back in 2012, which was an immediate critical and financial success, with many praising the dance numbers, acting, direction, and writing. Soderbergh and Tatum have also collaborated on films Haywire, Side Effects, and Logan Lucky.
The Magic Mike films follow Tatum's Mike, a male stripper who dreams of owning his own business, and the various troubles he has in getting there. Both films are characterized by their extended sequences of male dance, with the scenes being credited for the success of the first two films. With the new film's title officially being Magic Mike's Last Dance, the franchise will effectively end with the third installment.
"The third [movie] is the sort of apex of everything that we've been talking about in that area. Not just taking the dancing to another level, but really getting into the relationship aspect that's that's been an undercurrent in all of the films. Like Mike has a full-on relationship that's at the center of this movie, while all this stuff is going on, and we haven't done that before.
Along with Tatum, the franchise also features Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguiz, and Gabriel Iglesias as well as Matthew McConaughey in the first film only. Magic Mike 3 will also star Thandiwe Newton, the Emmy-winning star of Westworld.
Magic Mike proved in 2012 that a film doesn't have to choose between being intelligent and appealing, with a confident screenplay and sensitive direction to complement the broader sex appeal. With Soderbergh back at the helm, he's sure to bring his unique perspective and camerawork. The film is sure to feature another top-shelf performance from Tatum, as well, given the added depth the character will have in the concluding chapter.
