Marriage is the prize for finding someone you’re connected to and building a life together, not something a production company can award you
Rebecca Reid: ‘You can’t life-hack your way into a marriage’ was a fairly exciting new technology, which means that I’ve got embarrassing proof of just how obsessed I was with the idea of, and from just how young. From my mid-teens there are mood boards of dresses, champagne glasses, twee signs and what I now realise are very ugly shoes.
But what I really don’t understand is how marriage has somehow become the latest in vogue prize on reality TV shows likeI’ve heard plenty of things accused of destroying the sanctity of marriage – same-sex relationships, divorce, having kids out of wedlock – and I’ve always been able to roll my eyes.
Time and time again the contestants on these shows say much the same thing, that they’ve watched all their friends get married and they want their go, they’re sick of spending their time and money celebrating other people’s happiness and they want their turn. We all understand that. It’s perfectly reasonable and completely fair. But you can’t life-hack your way into a marriage..
There’s a grand irony in the fact that the harder you strive to get married, the more change there seems to be that ultimately you might end up not being married anymore five years later. Sure, there are couples who got engaged after a handful of dates and went on to have happy lives together, but I’m inclined to believe that they got married because they were so wrapped up in each other, not because they were gagging to have a wedding, which seems to be the main motivation of the contestants on these shows. If anyone watching, is tempted to try and take any kind of life hack to getting hitched, I beg you not to.
