Madrid Open: Carlos Alcaraz survives scare to reach quarter-finals

Carlos Alcaraz continues his quest for a third straight title at the Madrid Open with a hard-fought win against Jan-Lennard Struff.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz survived a scare against Jan-Lennard Struff to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.

But the world number three prevailed in front of a home crowd to wrap up a 6-3 6-7 7-6 win after almost three hours. The 20-year-old will face Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev, who beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-2 6-4 earlier on Tuesday. The Australian Open champion reacted well to dropping his first set of the tournament before setting up a last-eight meeting with Norway's in-form Casper Ruud or Auger-AliassimeThe world number four from Russia, who will face five-time winner Rafael Nadal or Jiri Lehecka next, has now reached at least the quarter-finals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 events.
