Madonna’s older brother, Anthony Ciccone, died last week after long struggling with homelessness and alcohol abuse.
Two days before he died, Ciccone himself removed his feeding and breathing tubes, TMZ said. Ciccone’s cause of death has not been released.
But their mother’s death had a different impact on Anthony Ciccone. Instead of driving him to succeed, it “blighted his life and led to a much different path,” the Daily Mail said. While Madonna moved to New York City and launched her musical career, eventually acting in movies, becoming an icon of culture and fashion and amassing an estimated $850 million fortune, her older brother dropped out of college in his 20s. He spent years moving and struggling to hold jobs.
“I’d have to bust the door open and kick the guy out,” Ciccone told the Daily Mail. “She didn’t forgive me for that. To me, she was just an annoying sister.”
