As Macy's continues to reopen stores that were temporarily shuttered due to COVID-19, the department store chain says sales are better than anticipated as it plans for the holiday shopping season.

“The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted our first quarter sales and earnings results, but I am proud of the way our team navigated this difficult period and maintained the business while our stores were closed,” Gennette said. “Our strong digital business sales trend continued throughout May, and it is encouraging to see that as we reopen a store, the digital business in that geography continues to be strong.

Most stores are expected to be reopened by late June, Gennette said on May 21. Macy's Inc., which includes Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury, had 775 total locations, which included 551 Macy's stores, as of February.
