French President Emmanuel Macron said the country will not be tearing down statues or rewriting its history in response to pressure from anti-racism activists
against police brutality and racism. Similar movements in the U.S., Belgium and U.K. have toppled or defaced statues of such figures in their countries.
"Our fight must continue ... to fight against the fact that one's name, address, skin color still all too often reduce the equal opportunities everyone should have," Macron said.
