The board of elections rescinded its 2-1 vote after learning from the state that it did not have the authority to hold such a referendum.
WILLIAMSPORT – Voters in Lycoming County will not get the opportunity to decide in November whether to keep using an electronic system to tabulate votes.rescind the action they took last TuesdayRepublican Commissioners Scott L. Metzger and Tony R. Mussare explained they had no choice but to change their vote after the Department of State advised them they lacked authority to put such a referendum on the ballot.
The county received several legal opinions that it would lose a court challenge, Metzger and Mussare said. They could not approve spending taxpayers’ money knowing in advance they would lose, they said. “This is the way we take back our country,” she said, noting Lycoming County is leading the way in Pennsylvania by putting the question on the ballot.
Metzger and Mussare at last Tuesday’s meeting approved a ballot question substituting electronic voting systems for machines. Democrat Commissioner Rick Mirabito voted no. They claimed the issue is non-partisan but much of their rhetoric during the more than three-hour meeting came out of former President Trump’s playbook.
