The restaurant introduced the 'pizza for a penny' scheme in the late 80s
Pizzaland was founded in 1970 in London, and Manchester was selected for the location of its first restaurant outside the capital. The chain went on to have over 140 outlets across the UK, including branches in Deansgate and Mosley Street.
The campaign included discount coupons being put in newspapers for people to cut out and take to their local Pizzaland. In exchange for the coupon, customers who purchased a pizza could obtain another of equal or lesser value for just 1p. This was because customers began to only visit their local restaurant if they had a coupon to use. It’s believed the hugely popular scheme was a major catalyst in all UK Pizzalands closing in 1996.
