“It is with sadness we share the death of our long-time sports editor, John Alvanitakis,” the news organization wrote on its Facebook page. “John truly believed in the kids he wrote about,” The Perry County Times wrote on Facebook. “He continued to do this job well into retirement age because he believed Perry County kids deserved recognition for their athletic and academic accomplishments. He had a bubbly, infectious laugh and was a joy to work with. The entire newspaper staff is shocked and deeply saddened by his passing, and offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends in this time of mourning.
