Newsham Park Hospital has become a mecca for ghost hunters
The building sits silently, in a quiet corner of the sweeping Victorian park in Tuebrook. Its broken arches, fallen chimneys, and boarded windows, provide a haunting presence as darkness falls.
Ray said: “We went along and they took us to a part that used to be an orphanage, we went off down a corridor on our own. In 1868, the initiative took flight, with large sums donated by private citizens and ship-owning merchants. On April 7 1870, Liverpool Town Council gave 7,000 square yards of land on the northeast side of Newsham Park to construct the institution. In May 1886, Queen Victoria herself visited and added her name to the list of patrons.
By 1918 one thousand orphans were being housed at the hospital, with the First World War creating a strain on its ability to operate. Following a visit by Queen Mary in 1921 George V granted it a Royal Charter of Incorporation. John Gray worked on the hospital switchboard and reception from 1973 to 1986. The then 84-year-old attributed a number of operations he underwent in the 70s to the ‘bad luck’ brought on to him from working at the Grade II listed building.
