Liverpool's youth system proves its worth as seven academy graduates feature in the emphatic win, with four making their first team debuts.
Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Toulouse was the proudest of nights for the club’s academy as seven graduates of the Reds’ youth system featured in the emphatic win.
"It was another great night for the Academy players and staff,” Under-18s head coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson beamed to the club website the day after the game. "This is just the start of their journey and they know that, but we have a manager who gives youth a chance if they are good enough and continue to work hard and improve.
It’s a different story for Doak, who hasn’t actually played for the Under-21s yet this season due to his first-team involvement. Introduced as a late substitute against Chelsea on the opening day of the season, he has also started against LASK Linz and Leicester in the Europa League and League Cup respectively and been an unused substitute on five different occasions.
Clearly, such matches will be the perfect platform for Doak, if back fit, and his fellow academy graduates to add to their senior minutes. But unlike his fellow young team-mates, the winger has an extra incentive when it comes to staking his claim this season. "Everyone’s excited to see Ben and we all agree that his potential is enormous and he is doing very well. We’ve all got a massive responsibility to help him fulfil that potential. It’s amazing to see such a young player who can excite the fans - but he wasn’t the only one tonight."
