Cabinet member admits a 'long, hard look' is required at the future of managing leisure centres

Two Liverpool Council-run leisure centres could be taken out of the city's hands in a bid to ease its financial pressures.

Documents released ahead of the authority’s culture and visitor economy select committee next week said a review of the leisure sites was approved back in October 2020 in a bid to establish how financial pressures could be eased. In March, Liverpool Council agreed to implement a budget saving for leisure centres of £250,000 this year and a further £1.8m up to 2026. It is projected the service has an overspend of £3.4m per year.

“A small number of the centres are in poor condition and being used by fewer people, and as a result, we are having to subsidise their use more and more. This isn’t unique to Liverpool, as leisure services across the country are under pressure, due to factors such as reduction in funding and post-Covid uptake in gym memberships.”
