TheProudFamily producer Ralph Farquhar has teased there were pitches for a live-action version of the show: 'We pitched live-action, we pitched live-action and animation... So Proud Family could, I think, obviously really work as a live-action show.'
Executive producer Ralph Farquhar reveals previous plans for a live-action version of The Proud Family. The Disney Channel animated series, following the adventures of Penny Proud, aired from 2001-2005 and originally concluded with the release of The Proud Family Movie. A success at the time, many praised the show for its representation as well as its humor and exploration of early teenage years. A revival titled The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder premiered on Disney+ in 2022.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Prior to the release of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, a potential reboot seemed a possibility considering the original only consisted of two seasons. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Farquhar revealed that he and creator Bruce W. Smith made pitches to continue the show, which included a live-action version. The executive producer noted that there were ideas for live-action and animation as well.
"Well, to be perfectly honest, when we first went off [the air], we felt like, ‘Why are we off?’ So Bruce and I were pitching every year since 2005, up until we got picked up [for Louder and Prouder], and we pitched live-action, we pitched live-action and animation, we pitched a whole bunch of things. So Proud Family could, I think, obviously really work as a live-action show.
A live-action version of The Proud Family could work, considering it portrays realistic people and settings, and would give audiences yet another update to the characters they have grown familiar with. Live-action depictions of animated shows have been done before, and while it might be difficult to find actors who match the original counterparts, fan casts for this potential version of The Proud Family continue to be made.
It will be interesting to see if a live-action version of The Proud Family ever comes to fruition, and to learn more about what Farquhar and Smith's previous plans for that looked like. With the renewed popularity of Disney's animated series, it is possible that a live-action movie or television show could happen at some point down the line.
