Actress Noma Dumezweni is a confirmed cast member of the 2023 live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, but the part she will be playing remains a mystery. All that has been revealed is that her character is new to the remake and wasn't part of the original 1989 animated film. This has led many to theorize that Dumezweni will play Ariel's mother.
The Queen was supposed to have been killed by sailors, which is why Ariel's father was so reluctant to indulge her fascination with the world above the sea. Aside from dying, Ariel's mother had minimal impact on her story. In fact, there were very few women in The Little Mermaid except for the villain, Ursula. Therefore, the inclusion of Ariel's mother could be a welcome change.
