Emmerdale star Lisa Riley who plays Mandy Dingle refuses to take cancer test despite family history
Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley has revealed the emotional reason she refuses to have cancer tests despite her family history of the disease. The soap star, who plays Mandy Dingle, recently watched her character undergo genetic testing to learn about her predisposition to the condition.
In an interview with the Mirror, Lisa said: "It's my life and I don't want to have that test done. We've had years of conversation about it at Emmerdale, long before this storyline, and people have asked me: 'But Lisa, with your history and your gene pool, why would you not do it?"And I reply: 'Because I don't need to do it.' I just want to be me and live my life from day to day. I could get hit by a lorry tomorrow.
Usually, women in the UK have a 15 per cent chance of getting breast cancer, but if they have the faulty BRCA2 gene, it goes up to 40-85%, and with the faulty BRCA1 gene, it's 65-85 per cent. Children have a 50% chance of getting this gene from their parents. She added: "I'm not a statistic. People might think: 'Well, on paper, Lisa is going to have breast cancer by the time she's 56.' Possibly that might be the case, but I don't want to be told that. I want to live my life to the fullest."
