Detroit Lions executive Rod Wood revealed the new team uniforms are a reward for Dan Campbell and the team.
As it turns out, the introduction of one of the new jerseys, specifically the black color-way, helps Lions team president and CEO Rod Wood fulfill a longstanding promise to coach Dan Campbell .
During a press conference on Thursday, Wood revealed Campbell asked him about bringing back the black jerseys in 2021, to which he responded that he'd consider it when the team wins the NFC North. After Detroit's run to the NFC Championship last season, Wood said that the re-introduction of the black jerseys were a reward for Campbell and the team, perCampbell wore the black uniforms during his tenure as a player in Detroit, where spent three seasons from 2006 to '09, before his retirement. The team has not worn their black jerseys since the '07 season.
The Lions snapped a six-season playoff drought last year, and the team made its deepest run in the playoffs since 1991. Although they didn't reach the Super Bowl, Wood made good on his promise to Campbell after an undeniably successful campaign.
