The leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats has revealed he has been receiving therapy for more than two years because of the level of abuse he endures.
MSP opens up about personal toll of toxic attacks
In an interview on the BBC’s The Sunday Show yesterday, Mr Cole-Hamilton said he was ‘very grateful’ that his party had the means and inclination to fund counselling which had helped him ‘unpack the stresses and the strains of this job’.‘I’ve been receiving therapy for probably the last two-and-a-bit years because this is an intense job, but it’s under constant public scrutiny.
He added that he believed the time of constitutional wrangling in Scotland was ‘passing away’ and the more political discourse is focused on ‘the day-to-day issues’ then the more likely it would be to improve given it was ‘harder to take offence’ over issues such as the health service or education. In a direct attack on the new First Minister, he said Mr Swinney had been ‘party to and complicit in’ every significant decision taken by SNP chiefs since 2004.‘Conference, it was he who attended Gold Command – the secretive central committee at the heart of the government’s response to the pandemic, for which there is barely any record.’
