Danny Smith was forced to leave two jobs after life-changing injuries at the 2022 Champions League final and is looking to 'reinvent' himself in the mental health field

As Danny Smith attempted to fend off the gang of muggers outside the Stade de France, he wasn't immediately aware of the life-changing injury he had sustained.

"My mate was then hit over the head with a crash helmet and then Daniel was trying to pull me one way but I didn't want to turn my back on them. They were all whistling and before we knew it there were about 50 around us. This one guy pretended to be a peacemaker but he had a hammer that I didn't see at all. He reached out and struck me on the knee and I was left incapacitated. It must be his little party piece because he could've hit me over the head if he wanted.

"They knew I was lying. They asked what the pain was between one and 10, so I said four but they knew. They asked if I wanted any pain medication which I refused because I just knew I had to get Daniel home. They told me I couldn't fly so I told them it was only an hour's flight, I said I'd go to the hospital as soon as I got back.

"When I had to leave my job, it broke my heart," he reveals. "I had been there for 13 years, I loved it, absolutely loved it. One of the things I was striving for during physiotherapy was so I could get back to work with my mates.

He says: "It's great the way the counsellor explains it. She said if you imagine your brain like your hand . If you imagine these fingers are your everyday functioning, your rationale and everything else, but when the incident happened and since then, this is your fight or flight that has come into play.

"We were pretty safe and maybe Dan didn't know that at the time but I was more worried about what I could do to help those down at the front. So that has been the big realisation through the counselling that, actually, I didn't freeze. It's helped me massively knowing that because the guilt initially was terrible."
