Letters to the Editor — Thoughts on repairing our elections and eliminating gerrymandering
Re: “Repairing our elections” and “Election victors must govern for all Texans,” by Joe Straus, Nov. 27 Opinion.gave as an editorial plus an essay by Straus. At a time when so many high school students are inadequately taught the U.S. Constitution and how it was supposed to work, you have presented many sides of problems we are facing with our government today.
I cherish my privilege to have my vote counted, even if my choices are not the winners. This education is a must if we are to remain a democratic republic. Next, abolish political action committees and super PACs in favor of totally public funded elections. Candidates’ first and only concern should be appealing to voters, rather than billionaires, corporations or special interests, with reason rather than mass propaganda.
This editorial on gerrymandering is most timely for me since this election cycle I have been personally affected by it. I discovered that my area of Garland has been moved from the 32nd Congressional District into the East Texas 5th Congressional District, represented by Terrell Republican Lance Gooden.
Why is it that this practice is accepted procedure? A quick check of Wikipedia reveals that gerrymandering is “almost always considered a corruption of the democratic process.” Even Webster’s defines it as “dividing a voting area unfairly.”
