Parents desperate for more opportunities for their children are tired of the hypocrisy.

That’s because 9,000 working families receiving Invest in Kids scholarships may have to switch schools next year when the life-changing program expires.
And let’s not sugarcoat it. Illinois’ public education system is failing families. In Chicago Public Schools, where students had nearly two years of virtual instruction,were meeting or exceeding expectations in mathematics in 2022, according to the Illinois Report Card. Only 20% of CPS students were reading at grade level in 2022.
The Invest in Kids program sends up to $75 million in public dollars to private schools, while more than 70% of Illinois’ public schools are underfunded. The state’s hundreds of thousands of low-income students are harmed by the funding shortfall. The Invest in Kids Act is scheduled to sunset in January 2025. The fall veto session is the last opportunity for the Illinois legislature to preserve it. Our legislators need to hear that the program should end.
