We chat with Surrounded stars Letitia Wright and Jamie Bell discuss the real-life inspiration for Wright's character and what drew them to the new Western:
Surrounded is a character-driven Western focused on Moses "Mo" Washington, a freedwoman hiding her identity. Mo served as a Buffalo Soldier. Five years after the Civil War, Mo is traveling out West to claim a gold mine she bought, but when the stagecoach she is traveling on is caught in a bloody ambush, everything changes. Mo is left to stand guard over the notorious outlaw Tommy Walsh, who led the ambush, while the other survivors look for help.
Letitia Wright: I have never seen a black woman in this type of situation before. I was intrigued by the inspiration. The writers and myself, we found in Cathay Williams who was an actual Buffalo Soldier she was a woman. Now you're gonna go research her. Yeah, let's go! Jamie Bell: I think when you first meet him he's your typical outlaw. He's notorious. He's wanted, he's a bad guy. He's pretty mean, and he's done some terrible things. He's all about power. He wants to control everything. He wants to control people. So then when he's put in a situation of submissiveness that was the stuff for me that was more interesting. What does he do when he's cornered? What does he do when he's stuck.
