John Mikkelson and Mathew Castens play themselves as Water Pirates at Leon Valley Earthwise Living Day in 2020. The Water Pirates were one of numerous speakers and exhibitions sponsored by local residents. The event was promoted to encourage residence to be more environmentally conscious.A year after skipping in-person activities because of COVID-19, one of the longest-running annual environmental events in the area will resume in Leon Valley on March 5.

The event is run and organized by the committee, a nonprofit with seven members. Funding for the event includes $2,700 from the city of Leon Valley; $2,500 in donations from Tiger Sanitation, which provides waste management and recycling services to most of Leon Valley; and $250 each from Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union and the San Antonio River Authority.

The first Earthwise Living Day was in 1990, when 10 to 15 vendors showed up, Riley said. It originally was called Home and Horticulture Day. It included speakers and a free lunch of chicken salad and vegetables served on glass plates by the Garden Club of Leon Valley. This year’s event includes 16 vendors who make, create or promote eco-friendly, sustainable products that have been made from recycled materials or that provide services that promote a healthy lifestyle, Ealy said.
