Leicester City have been charged by the Premier League with breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules
It was the news everyone had been expecting when last night Leicester City were officially charged with breaching the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules. Leicester will now face an independent commission to adjudicate on the case against them for their PSR breach, with the timeframe as yet unknown of when any potential punishment will come if found guilty.
As yo can imagine, it was big news last night and that's been reflected in how the national media have reported the news today. Here’s how the national press have reported the story. Given this is a Premier League charge and Leicester are currently an EFL club, not to mention the time required to determine a punishment, it appears improbable that points could be taken from them this term.
The Premier League voted at its AGM last summer to introduce new rules to fast-track financial breaches - as happened with Everton and Forest - but those new rules were introduced after Leicester had been relegated, and so don't apply to them. We can all debate the inconsistencies of PSR, and the delay over Manchester City’s 115 breaches, but this is a very worrying time for Leicester.
