Daniel Farke’s Leeds United press conference took place at Thorp Arch this afternoon as he looked ahead to Saturday’s match with Huddersfield Town
. It had been two days since that frustrating 1-0 loss to Stoke City at Bet365 Stadium in the Championship, where the Whites missed a penalty before seeing Pascal Struijk score an unfortunate own goal.
Patrick Bamford’s penalty miss has dominated the news agenda since he skied that effort on Wednesday night, but rather than grow weary with the questions, Farke was keen to pull back the curtain fully and explain to fans what had played out. Jaidon Anthony, it transpires, is handy on spot-kicks, but was also sat in the dugout. Bamford, as with all substitutes, would not have been Farke’s preference from 12 yards out.
“Players have to be involved in the game. That's why I'm always struggling to name players who are substituted in to overtake a penalty.” Bamford’s record from the spot has been highlighted as something which should have forced Farke to step in at Stoke, but the manager’s made clear to everyone their past failures are no barrier to a fresh start under him.
The immediate impact of Wednesday’s loss was watching Ipswich Town stretch their lead over the Whites to nine points with a game in hand. Even with more than two-thirds of the campaign to go, that distance has troubled some supporters.“The difference to Ipswich or whatever is not important for me,” he said. “The table is, for me, just important after 40 games. I also don't like we always have to be concerned about something.
