The Everton chairman and theatre producer has died aged 78
Everton FC chairman and theatre producer Bill Kenwright CBE died age 78, it was confirmed today. Mr Kenwright became known to most when he appeared on Coronation Street as Gordon Clegg and also in the Liver Birds, Z Cars and Carry On films before he found success as a theatre and film producer.
A lifelong Everton FC fan, Kenwright joined the club's board in 1989. After being involved in an initial, failed attempt as part of a consortium to buy the club he headed another and bought a 68% majority share of the club in 1999. He would become chairman of the club in 2004, replacing Sir Philip Carter, and would hold the position until his death.
A statement posted on Everton FC's Twitter page read: "Everton Football Club is in mourning following the death of Chairman Bill Kenwright CBE, who passed away peacefully last night aged 78, surrounded by his family and loved ones."
