Simon Property Group plans to open 49 malls in 10 states between Friday and Monday, according to a leaked internal memoThe memo lists reopening dates for malls in states that have started or are weighing reopening after their economies ground to a halt because of the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Simon spokeswoman Ali Slocum did not respond to The Indianapolis Star's calls and emails. Simon executives either declined to respond to the CNBC report or could not be reached.Malls in Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas would reopen Friday. Indiana malls would reopen Saturday, May 2, while Missouri malls would reopen on Monday, May 4.
Simon Property Group owns five malls in the Indianapolis area: Castleton Square, Circle Centre Mall, Greenwood Park Mall, Hamilton Town Center and the Fashion Mall at Keystone. The groups submitted proposals to the governor, who will announce Friday whether to start reopening Indiana's economy in May or extend the state's stay-at-home order. When asked, a spokeswoman for the Holcomb's office declined to release the plans, saying that they were still being reviewed and may contain confidential or proprietary details.
