An Aurora man has taken JetBlue to court over his removal from a plane last year because he wore a cloth mask emblazed with Let’s Go Brandon, the conservative message attacking President Joe Biden.
Ryan Salo filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Akron over the incident March 6, 2022, in which a flight attendant first ordered him to take the mask off and then had him removed from the plane.
Salo accused JetBlue of violating his First Amendment rights to free speech and his Fourth Amendment rights involving his removal from the plane. The lawsuit alleges that JetBlue inappropriately applied the federal mask mandate by prohibiting political speech. The lawsuit, filed last week by Matthew Markling, says that Salo traveled from Cleveland to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 3. It says Salo wore the mask, which had the phrase and the American flag on it, without a problem, from security to his flight on a JetBlue plane.Three days later, Salo wore the mask on another JetBlue plane for his return flight to Cleveland. A flight attendant approached him prior to the plane taking off and demanded Salo remove the mask, according to the lawsuit.
In a statement after the incident, JetBlue said “the customer in this incident was ultimately asked to deplane not because of his face mask, but his behavior toward our crewmembers.”
