The provider has invoiced him for the cost of a replacement
A law student is taking his student accomodation provider to court over a broken boiler. Matthew Goldsmith, a student at Nottingham Trent University, has filed a claim against The Student Lodge after he claims they broke the law by leaving his home's boiler unrepaired for 10 days.
Matthew, 22, moved into the six-bedroom HMO accomodation on Manvers Street at the start of the last academic year in September 2022. He says problems were evident "straight away", with the boiler breaking down every few months and being repaired temporarily by contractors. In the meantime, Matthew and his five housemates had to shower in cold water and could not wash up with warm water. Immersion heaters are installed at the property as a back-up for any boiler issues, but Matthew alleges these are broken too.
Matthew has now filed a Small Claim against The Student Lodge for £500 in compensation. He hopes it will be settled before it reaches court.
