I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
You might think that one of the most popular games of last year and a runaway GOTY winner may be planning to release DLC and obviously a future sequel. But in the case of Baldur’s Gate 3, neither is happening. Why? It’s more logical than you might imagine.
"You could see the team was doing it because everyone felt like we had to do it, but it wasn’t really coming from the heart, and we’re very much a studio from the heart. It’s what gotten us into misery and it’s also been the reasons for our success." When it was cancelled, the team was “elated” he said, and everyone agreed they just wanted closure on the game .
They are also not making Baldur’s Gate 4, saying that another studio can “pick up this incredible legacy.” You may understand the DLC reasoning, but no sequel? Again, there’s a reason for that.Larian is planning to work on new project which would “leave the IP in Wizards of the Coast’s hands.
It does sound like the right call on both fronts, both for the DLC and the decision not to do another sequel, which would likely take the better part of the next decade. But I think everyone cannot wait to see what Larian actually does next.
