An error forecasting the national funding formula has caused shockwaves across the education system
Every school in Lancashire is set to lose out on an average £15,000 of funding every year due to a Government blunder, Labour analysis claims. The figures, which the government claims have been misrepresented, equates to a total drop of more than £10m across the county.
In its defence, the Government argues that as 2024/45 funding had not been officially communicated at that existing funding is not being adjusted.Labour has condemned the Conservatives’ "staggering mathematical incompetence" which will leave schools in the Lancashire County Council area worse off by a total of £8.6m. In Blackpool, the figure is just shy of £1m and in Blackburn with Darwen, it's £917,000.
But Labour says it is ministers who must take responsibility and slammed the latest problem to hit the education system after strikes and the RAAC crisis which saw many forced to close. Bridget Phillipson, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, said: “Rishi Sunak wants young people to learn maths to 18, but he ought to get his own house in order first and teach Conservative Education Ministers how to count.
Ms Phillipson said Labour's plans for the education system if it comes into power include fully funded breakfast clubs and mental health support. She stopped short of offering any pledges on overall funding but said the existing promises would be funded by removing the charitable status from private schools. She added: "We will start by recruiting 6,500 more teachers and put mental health counsellors in every secondary school, paid for by ending private schools’ tax breaks.
