Darrener Gary Aspden created the adidas Spezial range 10 years ago
It's fair to say that artist Gary Aspden has well and truly put his hometown of Darwen squarely on the map. A lifelong three-stripe fan, Gary previously headed up the Adidas Entertainment Team globally and created the concept for the label's Spezial trainer range back in 2014.
"I have a connection to Darwen that I find difficult to explain or verbalise. When I’m creating Spezial collections, I often draw on my personal experiences in my youth as a source of inspiration. Gary, a die-hard Blackburn Rovers fan, added: “People often question why I’m so keen to keep doing things locally when these exhibitions could be anywhere in the world.
The exhibition is set to be hosted in Darwen town centre in an empty shop space recently leased by Blackburn with Darwen Council as part of its £120m regeneration plans for the town. Up until my teenage years many of my clothes were hand-me-downs from my older brother but as a teenager, I guess I was obsessed with style.
At 16 I left at the first opportunity to go and work at Scapa Porritt in Blackburn. That was an eye-opener, and I only lasted a few months before I ended up signing on. After the Acid House parties came to a close, things went really downhill for me personally. I had a few very difficult years and eventually hit a place where I needed to make some dramatic changes to the way I was living.
I came back to Lancashire a year later for the final year of my degree and graduated with First Class Honours.A. I’d been into Hip Hop when I was younger and a lad I knew from Urmston was the European B-Boy champion. He asked me if I could help him get endorsements from brands and I’d met someone who worked at adidas during my year interning.
I put together a proposal for a modern, premium, archive-inspired range called adidas Spezial. They liked the idea and took it to the HQ in Germany where the head of adidas Originals signed off on it. A number of local people here have been really supportive of what we do with the Spezial range. We could never have done the Blackburn SPZL trainer without the help of the local council in getting us legal permissions to use the name of the town.
