John-Ross Rennie was found guilty at the High Court of benefitting from a robbery which involved the theft of bitcoin worth around $200,000, a car and other valuable items.
A Lanarkshire man has appeared in court as part of the first ever investigation in Scotland to involve tracing the movements of stolen cryptocurrency.
John-Ross Rennie was found guilty of reset - possessing property knowingly acquired by theft, robbery, fraud or embezzlement and intending to retain it - following the theft of bitcoin worth around $200,000 at the time. The 28-year-old wasn't present at the robbery, that took place at an address in Blantyre in March, 2020, but was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow after it was established he had benefitted.
During the robbery, a quantity of bitcoin was was forcibly transferred to an account found to be linked to Rennie. A car and other valuable items were also taken.Read more: Paisley nursery inspection finds 'dangerous' play areas, stressed staff and a dodgy boiler Detective Inspector Craig Potter, of Police Scotland’s Cyber Investigations unit, said: “This was complex investigation and the first robbery in Scotland to involve tracing the movements of stolen cryptocurrency.
“Specialist cybercrime officers were able to follow the movement of funds to show he had been responsible for the bitcoin wallet which received the stolen funds.“This is a complex and constantly evolving technology. This conviction demonstrates Police Scotland capability and commitment to tackling criminality involving the digital space and bringing criminals operating in this world to justice.”
