Updated Urus goes 17 seconds faster than a Bentayga at Pikes Peak. Next stop Nurburgring?

Well if we’d known the time was coming this soon, we’d not have written about the teaser. Just a day after hinting at an updated Urus setting a new SUV record at Pikes Peak, Lamborghini has. And the car itself isn’t far off, either; a ‘premiere in mid-August’ means it must be one for Monterey next week.

10:32.064 is the important number, 17 seconds ahead of the 10:49.902 achieved by Rhys Millen in a Bentley Bentayga four years ago. Simone Faggioli, holder of the rear-wheel drive record at Pikes Peak in a crazy Norma M20, was driving the Lambo up the 156 turns at 12.42 miles. Despite not actually running on the legendary hill climb weekend, Lamborghini says the Urus time is 100 per cent legit and validated by the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb timekeepers.

All well and good, though Lamborghini is still tight lipped about exactly what’s made this Urus into a record breaker. The tyres will have played a big part, Pirelli creating with Lamborghini its first semi-slick ‘developed to meet the characteristics of an SUV.’ So, yes, this is a 2.3-tonne car on P Zero Trofeo Rs, like a McLaren Senna. For the record run, the Urus had 285-section fronts on a 22-inch rim, 325-section at the back.

Whether this Urus has any more power than before, however, or any more meaningful upgrades than track day rubber, isn’t yet clear. Lamborghini speaks of a ‘standard twin-turbo V8 engine’, but whether that’s still to the old 650hp spec isn’t revealed. Either way, it lays down a heck of a marker for the rest to match, should they wish. And Lamborghini surely won’t stop here if it really does have a rocketship on its hands.

“The decision to test ourselves at Pikes Peak… demonstrates the outstanding performance of the new Urus model to be presented shortly,” said Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s CTO. “Pikes Peak is the most famous hill climb event in the world, as well as being extremely challenging for the car: the uneven track layout tests the chassis’ balance; the significant altitude differences stress the powertrain; and the weather conditions can change very rapidly between start to finish.
