LOS ANGELES — Seventeen seconds into the third quarter of the Lakers’ 111-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series on Saturday night, LeBron James was lying on the Crypto.com Arena court writhing in pain and Dillon Brooks was on his way to the locker room.
But then, as James dribbled the ball up the court in the opening seconds of the second half, Brooks punched the leading scorer in NBA history in the groin. After a brief review by the game’s officials, Brooks was assessed a flagrant-2 foul and ejected after scoring seven points on 3-for-13 shooting. Grizzlies star Ja Morant returned after sitting out Game 2 and had 45 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds, going 6 for 10 from 3-point range. He scored 22 consecutive Memphis points during a stunning fourth quarter.
The second-seeded Grizzlies did themselves no favors in the first quarter. They missed 22 of 25 shots, including 12 of 13 from behind the 3-point arc, and had six turnovers that the Lakers turned into 10 points. The Lakers made 14 of their first 27 shots and seemed poised to deliver a beatdown.
