Lainey Wilson's rise to fame was anything but easy. So far in 2024, the singer won best country album at the Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and is set to release her fifth album, 'Whirlwind,' in August. But Wilson tells Sunday TODAY's Willie Geist that it took her 10 years to really get noticed in the music industry. After graduating from high school in 2011, then 19-year-old Wilson headed straight for Nashville to try and make a name for herself.
'You got to be a little bit nuts to want to do this. You do.' In 2021, Wilson started gaining traction with her music. That year, her song 'Things a Man Oughta Know' from her studio album 'Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin'' topped Billboard's Country Airplay chart. But that popularity didn't lead to a source of revenue, she said. 'I could barely sell a ticket. It was like the strangest thing,' she said.
