David Lammy will meet Republicans and Democrats as both US and UK elections approach - as a senior Trump ally heaped praise on the shadow foreign secretary
Shadow foreign secretary David Lammy, who has been meeting senior figures from both Republican and Democratic parties in recent weeks, is to continue those talks as both elections approach,The increased contact is a sign that – despite Starmer and Trump coming from different ends of the political spectrum – the two men may have to forge a new alliance in office at a time of growing fears about global instability.
Elbridge Colby, who is tipped to become national security adviser if the Republican candidate wins a second presidential term in November, toldthat Lammy had a “more compatible vision” with the Trump team. This included a bigger focus on defence and on Europe, Colby said. Starmer’s team has had discussions with the current White House about possible talks but nothing has been scheduled yet. The Labour leader, in anlast month, said he would meet him. It is understood there has not yet been any contact between Starmer’s and Trump’s teams.
The Foreign Secretary’s talks in Washington last month amounted to an “astounding intervention into the American system … I mean, talk about foreign interference”, Colby said.
