Ian Murray said that the victories in Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire were "huge results in areas that we would not be expected to win and have won them relatively comfortably in the end with historic swings."The Tories were defending a 19,634 majority in Tamworth and a 24,664 majority in Mid Bedfordshire, but Labour were more than 1,000 votes ahead in each seat after yesterday's by-elections. Mid Bedfordshire had voted Conservative since 1931.
Murray told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme: "We're all tired but jubilant, confident but not complacent. "So these are huge results in areas that we would not be expected to win and have won them relatively comfortably in the end with historic swings."The Liberal Democrats also had a strong vote in Mid Bedfordshire and have claimed that they played a crucial role in defeating the Tories. He said: "The Liberal Democrats are strong and parts of the country where the Labour Party is not.
"In fact, all the pundits beforehand were suggesting the Liberal Democrats may actually cost Labour the victory and keep the Conservatives in that seat.
