Sir Keir Starmer hails ‘phenomenal result’ as new MP Sarah Edwards overturns majority of almost 20,000October 20, 2023 2:55 amhas won the Tamworth by-election after overturning a massive Conservative majority of nearly 20,000, in what Sir Keir Starmer described as a “phenomenal result”.
Sir Keir’s party had needed a 21.4% swing to win the seat, but achieved 23.9% in Thursday’s vote – larger than the Selby & Ainsty by-election in July and the party’s second largest at a by-election since 1945. Labour’s new MP Sarah Edwards, who defeated Tory Andrew Cooper by a majority of 1,316, said: “Tonight the people of Tamworth have voted for Labour’s positive vision and a fresh start.
“They’ve sent a clear message to Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives that they have had enough of this failed Government, which has crashed the economy and destroyed our public services.“My message to the Prime Minister is get in your government car, drive to Buckingham Palace, do the decent thing and call a general election.Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “This is a phenomenal result that shows Labour is back in the service of working people and redrawing the political map.
“To those who have given us their trust, and those considering doing so, Labour will spend every day acting in your interests and focused on your priorities. Labour will give Britain its future back.”who resigned after being found to have drunkenly groped two men.
