'Mayor Garcetti and City Officials are cutting $100-$150 million from the LAPD budget to be reinvested in communities of color,' shares. janaya_khan:

to call out DA Jackie Lacey, who has yet to prosecute a single police officer despite the death of hundreds of people at the hands of LAPD during her tenure. We then marched to City Hall to call out Mayor Eric Garcetti for his proposed increase to the police budget, which is already billions of dollars, in the middle of a pandemic.

I know this may seem scary. The media has ensured that we understand police as flawed but heroic people who always do what’s right when it really counts. Politicians know that they can drum up the right voter incentive if they promise to increase the police budget. To think of a society that does not have police in it can evoke fears of violence. But police do not prevent violence, they only respond to it.

To be clear: Defunding the police is not stripping the department of all its resources, but rather reallocating funds to other agencies. It would give us options instead of using 911 as a one-stop-shop for all crises. Defunding the police frees up money for treatment centers, accessible healthcare, mental health resources. It would mean being able to invest in scientists, researchers, therapists, civilian services, and social workers.

If you grew up or live in an affluent, white neighborhood, you have likely had very few interactions with the police. It is only in racialized and disenfranchised communities where police presence is a constant threat, which all too often results in the tragic loss of another Black life. George Floyd and

should be alive today. They should be home with their loved ones. Instead, their lives were viciously cut short. And the only way to ensure that something like this never happens again is to defund the institution that enables it.It is time to imagine a new way of intervention that does not result in killing people.
